If you’d like to combine your love for medicine with your love for adventure, a medical placement in Tanzania offers you the perfect opportunity to indulge in both. While weekdays can be unbelievably hectic, weekends offer plenty of opportunities to get away and explore in and around the region. One trip that you should absolutely not forego is a weekend trip to Zanzibar.

Zanzibar is an archipelago located in the Indian Ocean, 25 miles from the coast of Tanzania. Made up of Pemba Island, Zanzibar Island and several smaller islets, it is 60 miles long, 20 miles wide and occupies a total area of about 650 square miles.

There’s plenty to see and do in Zanzibar, from rambling around in an ancient town named Stone Town or basking on any one of the beautiful beaches, to trekking in the Jozani Natural Forest Reserve or indulging in ultimate thrill- diving.

Stone Town

Recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Stone Town is an old city with a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, bustling bazaars and imposing mosques. What is particularly interesting is the sheer number of grand Arab houses that you will come across. If it seems like they are all trying to outdo each other in grandeur, well, that’s because that was the main idea. The original owners actually vied with each other and tried to build the ‘biggest and the best’ house around. The carved, brass-studded doors are undoubtedly extravagance at its best.

Beach Hopping

With more than 25 stunning beaches lapped by the warm azure waters of the Indian Ocean, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Should you choose one and just soak up the sun or should you go visit as many as you can? Now there is a tough choice for you to make…

Spice Plantations

If you’ve never visited a spice plantation before, you’re in for a real treat. The plantations have organized tours so you can learn about all of the different spices and their use in cooking, healthcare and cosmetics. This is also the cheapest and best place to buy your favourite spices and spice oils. Whether you are looking for cloves, cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg or other assorted spices, you know the flavors will be 100% unadulterated.

If trekking in the wilderness is more your type of thing, the Jozani Natural Forest Reserve has an excellent nature trail. Look for the Red Colobus Monkey while on your wander through the wild. These rare monkeys call the Jozani Forest their home and roam around freely in the area, giving wildlife enthusiasts a rare opportunity to observe them at close quarters.  Other wildlife you may come across include bush pigs, small buck and another various monkey species.

Diving in Zanzibar

Spectacular coral reef structures, rich marine life, fantastic visibility range of 20-60 meters and an average year-round water temperature of about 27°C – it would be a crime to pass up an opportunity to go diving in these conditions.

A weekend trip Zanzibar brings lots of excitement and unique experiences. The only problem you will face is deciding what to do first!
