Established in 1856, Sydney Medical School is the graduate medical school of the University of Sydney and is widely regarded as one of the most highly rated education and research institutions of the Asia-Pacific region. Internationally, it is currently ranked among the top 25 clinical, pre-clinical and health institutions by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The Sydney Medical Program has earned several teaching awards and is licensed to teach universities in the United Kingdom, Middle East and South Africa as well as other Australian universities. 

The school has an impressive faculty of distinguished professionals that lend support to its missions in research, education and healthcare. About 1,000 medical students and 2,000 postgraduate students are granted admission every year into the school’s education and research-training programs. 

Features Of The Sydney Medical Program 

The Sydney Medical Program is an internationally recognised, four-year medical degree leading to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Students also have the option for combining medicine with other postgraduate study programs that the school offers.

What You Will Learn At Sydney Medical School 

In surgeryThe four year course includes traditional lectures with highly experienced practitioners, regular problem-based learning exercises in small groups, ongoing opportunities to participate in research, and weekly clinical exposure at established hospitals.

During the first two years, students gain hands-on experience in a supervised, structured program with weekly clinical school participation and regular patient contact.

During the third and fourth years, students transfer to their clinical school full time for further in-depth exposure to clinical practices. Students also complete an optional term during which they can elect to participate in an honours research project. This can be done with one of the school’s international partners.

During the degree, students acquire a solid foundation in human anatomy and fundamental medical sciences. There are also several obligatory independent learning activities, pre-internship training and an 8 week rural rotation. Students who intend to practice in the US or Canada can avail of the preparation for North American facility. 

Upon completing the course successfully, students qualify to undertake an internship within the hospital system, after which they can apply for professional recognition as a medical practitioner in Australia or overseas.


Qualification Requirements for Admission Into Sydney Medical School

Entry into the Sydney Medical Program is based on satisfactory grade point average, score results in the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test and performance in multiple mini-interviews.
