Today, many universities and medical colleges have taken to looking at applicant’s profiles on social networking sites. Every student should know and understand the implications of this. In some cases, the admissions committee might stumble on information that could harm or hurt your chances of admission to the school.
Apart from doctors, there are also a number of senior students on the admissions committee and most of them are tech-savvy. They go ahead and present information about a candidate and in some cases an acceptance can change to a rejection due to the information they have sourced.
If you are new to social media networking, you may be surprised to see exactly how much personal information shows up online and it can be a little unnerving as well. Apart from social media profiles, you could also end up finding links to phone book listings to your address, news articles, petitions that you might have electronically signed and comments that you might have left on different websites.
In some cases, you may be able to remove some information from your profiles and that is exactly what you should be doing, especially if it has some unsavory details about you.
Here are just some of the things that could affect your image negatively:
Without getting too paranoid, ensure that all your networking accounts are set to private. Delete anything that you did in a crazy moment and posted online. Delete any personal information that you may have posted online or anything that could be possibly detrimental. If you aspire to join medical school, here’s some advice you should always keep in mind while engaging in social media
You should know that it is totally legal for the admissions committees to do an informal background check on all applicants and they will exercise that right. It is also totally legal to use any adverse information they find about you as a reason for them to reject your application. With that in mind, it is important to always maintain a clean image on all social networking sites. Conduct some research yourself and see what comes up – because that is what others will be able to see as well. Censor that and play safe.
The one thing that you absolutely should do is to adjust your privacy settings on all social media sites. This will prevent your personal information from being displayed to just anyone.
