If you wish to apply for the MBBS program at the School of Medicine you will first need to sit the GAMSAT or the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test. Remember, the GAMSAT test results are valid for two years so you can apply anytime within 2 years of taking the test.
After you’ve got your GAMSAT results, you can put in your application for admission to the UOW School of Medicine. The application for admission to the graduate programs and registration for the GAMSAT are two entirely different processes. When submitting your application, you will also need to submit all supporting documentation.
As with most other medical schools, the UOW School of Medicine too does not determine eligibility based only on academic performance. Instead, these are some of the criteria that are taken into consideration to decide whether or not to call you for the interview:
The duration of each academic year is approximately 42 weeks. Every week, students are slated to participate in an average of 15 to 20 hours of structured teaching in addition to15 to 30 hours of self-learning activities. There is no option for part time study for the MBBS degree program at the UOW Graduate School of Medicine.
In keeping with the vision of the school, the programme puts a lot of emphasis on healthcare in rural, regional and remote communities in Australia. Over the course of the program, as part of their clinical placement students are required to relocate for a period of time to hospitals, clinics and other community health facilities in rural, regional or remote locations within Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
On completion of the 4 year program, all graduates are required to undertake 1 year of pre-vocational supervised training. This training is called the internship or PGY1. Graduates who complete this pre-vocational training successfully will be automatically registered as Medical Practitioners in NSW. In Australia and New Zealand, upon successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply for registration as a Medical Practitioner.
