As a nurse you will be dealing with and providing care for patients across a wide range of backgrounds and ages. To be able to do your job well, you have to be able to put people at ease and also deal in a sympathetic manner with them and understand their fears and problems.
These two attributes are critical for anyone who wants to be a good nurse. You have to be a good listener and communicate well. You will also have to be constantly alert to any changes in the condition of the patent as well and understand the implications with reference to care.
Nurses are the ones who will have the most contact with the patients. You will have to be able to answer any questions that are asked of you and share your skills and knowledge with patients and their families or friends.
Your role as a nurse requires you to work in a multidisciplinary team that will include doctors, anaesthetists, physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists and many other professionals. You need to understand how all these people work as a team and have to be able to do the same.
There will be numerous occasions when you will be faced with stressful situations and you will play a key role in helping the patients as well as their families come out of their crisis.
Having the right values is a crucial factor as these will define you as a nurse.
Last but not least, you need to have the courage and commitment to do the right thing for your patients and to speak up whenever there are concerns, no matter what.
