Choosing any profession is a major decision and more so when if you are contemplating a profession as intense as medicine. If you are not sure if this is the right choice for you and need a little more to go on before making up your mind, a medical placement offers you the perfect solution. Gap Medics organises medical placements in a few select destinations especially chosen for the invaluable professional experiences they offer as well as the memorable personal experiences.

During a medical placement in Thailand, you get firsthand experience in the healthcare field while working with medical professionals in local medical clinics and community hospitals. Most of these clinics and hospitals work under extenuating circumstances, providing much-needed medical care despite being understaffed, under-equipped and under-funded. Under such circumstances, there are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to get hands-on experience in different aspects of health care. You may find yourself observing, assisting or even working in any of the departments within the establishment. This could include the outpatient clinic, inpatient wards, pharmacy, laboratory or the maternity ward or even the operation theatre. If you have had more experience you may even find yourself helping with administering injections and vaccines, taking vital measurements such as temperature and blood pressures, doing blood tests and other diagnostic tests and even assisting with nursing duties or emergency care.  Whether you have had some experienced or you are a pre-med volunteer with no experience at all, you will find that there is plenty of scope for learning and gaining valuable work experience.

In addition to all of the medical experience, during one of our placements, you also have the unexpected opportunity to integrate within the wider community by training and teaching in villages and schools or caring for kids in the local orphanage. Community work could encompass providing advice and counselling locals about what causes HIV and how to prevent or cope with the disease.

Travel opportunities

It does not have to be all work while you are on a placement in Tanzania. You will have plenty of spare time to explore the country’s many natural and cultural wonders. The nearby historical buildings, chaotic markets and picturesque natural surroundings are all unique experiences by themselves. Further away, a weekend trip to the 22,000 km² Ruaha National Park will leave you speechless as you take in the sheer beauty and magnificence of the part and its diverse animals, plants, birds and of course, the 475 km long Great Ruaha River.

When you book with Gap Medics, all of your travel arrangements to and from UK and Tanzania are taken care of and so are your boarding, lodging and clinic arrangements so you have nothing to worry about except for how to make the best of the opportunity.
