Health concerns have long been one of the most crucial challenges facing developing countries. Despite huge ongoing medical advancements, shocking statistics show that more than 6 million people die every year from diseases such as TB, cholera, malaria and HIV/AIDS.  In addition, obesity and smoking, traditionally thought of as problems associated with developed countries, are now increasingly becoming public health problems in developing countries too.  With overall good health and poverty reduction being so vital for the economic development of any country, tackling disease and ill health is of global importance.

A degree in Global Health can open many doors for you and will give you the opportunity to practice challenging medicine in developing countries around the world. There are several universities in the UK that offer an MSc in Global Health Services with epidemiology as the core subject. Epidemiology is considered the basic science of public health. It focuses on the preservation and improvement of the health of the population through preventive measures rather than curative measures.

The MSC in Global Health Science is a one-year, full time course that is designed to promote an in-depth understanding of the challenges of global health issues and their potential solutions by studying a wide spectrum of disciplines in biomedical and social studies. Students who are enrolled in the program learn to integrate medical, social, epidemiological and economic aspects of ill-health in developing countries. Students also learn to critically evaluate evidence in global health and they develop essential practical experience and skills in researching specific health problems.

Program Modules

The first term of the Global Health Science program typically consists of 4 compulsory core modules:

  1. Principles of epidemiology
    1. Challenges prevalent in global health
    2. Health policy and public health
    3. Principles of statistical methods for epidemiology

At the beginning of the second term, there is a one week introductory course in critical appraisal after which students undertake two advanced modules that they select from a list of five options:

After completing the two modules and the exams, students have to complete a research attachment with a 10,000 word dissertation to be submitted during the Long Vacation.

Criteria For Admission

Admission to the Global Health Science program is based on evaluation of:

On completion of the course, you will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding to practice in the field of global health or to do further research in this field. The scope for both is tremendous as there is an ongoing pressing requirement for global health doctors and the need to eventually find a permanent cure for several diseases is just as important.

If you are considering a career in global health, there’s no better way to prepare yourself and to get a close up view of what is involved than by doing a medical placement abroad in a developing country. The experience you will acquire through such a placement is invaluable.
