Hospital doctor shadowing & global health experience programs.
As we emerge from our spring break lairs and beach huts, we find ourselves with another vacation right around the corner: SUMMER 2014! For those of you who still don’t have summer plans, a specialty doctor shadowing program could be the perfect educational boost for the fall semester.
Want to know more about the Gap Medics pre med programs? Check out this testimonial from a recent Gap Medics alum!
Emily Holland is currently a junior at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She participated in a Gap Medics program in December of 2013. She spent two weeks in a fast-paced hospital in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
“I wanted to go to Thailand. I wanted a trip that would be a life-changing experience,” Emily explained. “More specifically, I’ve always had a passion for healthcare in the developing world.” Emily was an enthusiastic participant in the midwifery pre medical program. She engaged with healthcare professionals in the prenatal, neonatal and postnatal care units. She witnessed numerous ultrasounds, natural births and C-sections.
“I worked in the midwifery program at McCormick Hospital and it was unbelievable. It was one of the most incredible weeks of my life.” Emily went on to describe the impact her mentors had on her and her peers. “We learned so much. The nurses and doctors were so kind and answered everything we asked and more. I loved working with Pino. She was the head midwife and I cannot speak highly enough about her.”
When asked how the experience helped inform her decisions about her medical career, Emily highlighted that what she experienced was unique to watching doctors overseas. “It allowed me to see things that I would not have otherwise had the privilege of seeing until after medical school in America.”
Emily is twenty one years old and majors in political science and public health. She is considering doing a post bac program in medicine after she graduates from college. She hopes to one day become a midwife and volunteer her services in underserved communities.
