The pool at the Forest House, Morogoro, Tanzania Popular departments include: internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and paediatrics – you can choose to specialise in the areas that interest you. If you’re interested in tropical medicine, head to Tanzania or Thailand, where you can observe cases of malaria, TB and dengue fever. Regardless of destination, students also often observe childbirth, and major and minor surgery – anything from a hernia removal to brain surgery! 

Whilst your hospital placement is central to the Gap Medics experience, there is also plenty of time to explore your surroundings and immerse yourself in the local culture. You might find yourself on safari in Tanzania or snorkelling in Croatia.
