Ever thought of switching careers to become a lawyer? Here is your chance to do so while still making the most of your medical degree. Physicians are often used as expert witnesses in a courtroom in order to explain medical facts to the jury in a simple way. Some physicians also assist lawyers with various cases in a consultancy capacity.

Forensic research

Even though crime solving may seem like it happens only in the movies, a lot of forensic medical examiners do actually exist. And this can be a great job if you like using various facts to try and come to a conclusion as to how a person was killed or anything related to the death of the person. Forensic research includes studying any evidence that is found during a crime and then making the most of that evidence to draw up a conclusion.

Medical IT

Almost every sector of the economy is now dependent on various IT systems to make their businesses run and medicine is no exception. Large systems are built for hospitals and medical facilities to function. Some may be used by employees while some may be used by the management. Physicians can act as subject matter experts and work alongside the system developers and programmers in order to help them build these systems and suggest various ways to make them most efficient.

Healthcare communication

Healthcare communication deals mostly with physicians who act in a consultancy capacity. Some physicians like to work towards spreading health awareness to the public. Some work as consultants to insurance companies, law firms, hospital sports teams, pharmaceutical companies and other organisations that may be associated with the medical system in some way or the other. It may be a slow start, but once you build your reputation, this can be a very lucrative option.

Medical journalism

If you have a flair for writing, consider getting into the journalism side of medicine. People love reading about new medical breakthroughs and medical success stories. And since you have the medical knowledge, people will know that your work is authentic and facts are correct. You can either write full time with a newspaper, magazine or for a medical journal or you can work as a freelance writer and get paid based on your work.

Medical devices

Physicians who work with medical devices usually work for or with a company that is into manufacturing of various devices that are used in the medical field. There are different areas that you can work in, right from marketing and sales to compliance and testing of these devices. Certain agencies also hire people qualified in the medical field to work with the company in different capacities.

This list is not exhaustive and with newer specialties being introduced every so often, the list of options is set to grow even more. For a physician who wants to get into another field, it is important to play to your strengths and see where you would be able to put your skills to best use. If you are unsure which path would work best for you, a medical placement can help you recognise your strengths and weaknesses and can help you make a more informed decision and one that you are not likely to regret in the future.
