Catching up with the midwives on the ward If you’ve got our heart set on a career in nursing the first hurdle you need to cross is getting into nursing school. This means submitting an impressive application that will put you ahead of the thousands of the other applicants vying for the few seats available. If you know for sure that this is the right career path for you, you already have the edge over the others. Here are a few really useful ways that you can prep for your nursing school application:

Start planning as early as possible

It is never too early to start preparing for your nursing school application. While starting early is no guarantee that you will get accepted into nursing school, it definitely increases your chances.

The first thing you can do is start looking at science related subjects in school itself. It is also a good idea to participate in activities such as community work or volunteer your services at a local nursing home or child care centre.

Better still, try and get some experience in the nursing field itself. You can get this by spending time on a healthcare related internship or by going on a medical placement abroad where you can get a first hand look at what it is like to be a nurse. The big bonus in doing an internship or going on a medical placement is that it will give your application an instant boost. Nursing school authorities love to see that students are really committed to this particular profession and there’s no better way of showing your passion and commitment than by spending time actively caring for others.

Speak to nurses

The best way to get the real picture of nursing is from experienced nurses who are already in the field. Most nurses would be happy to answer any questions you have about the career itself or the working hours or job opportunities. Some nurses may even give you advice on which schools to apply to and what subjects to take. These are huge decisions you are going to have to make and getting some insider information can be very valuable in helping you make more informed decisions.

Do your research on financial help

Don’t wait until the last minute to find out whether you can avail of any kind of financial aid. The best time to start finding out about the types of financial help available is right at the outset when you still have plenty of time. This will help you make better decisions without feeling pressured. When researching different loans, take a look at their terms and conditions and think about whether or not you will be able to work off these loans and how long it would take you. If your academic records are outstanding, you can even talk to the nursing school directly about scholarships. You will find that there is a lot of financial help being offered for students pursuing their nursing education but you will need to put in some time and effort to research your options. Knowing that you can get the help you need, can be a huge relief and will help you stay motivated towards achieving your goal.

Once you are armed with all of the basic information and experiences, you will be able to put together a more compelling and convincing application that is sure to increase your chances of being accepted into nursing school.
