We are very proud to announce that due to high demand we have decided to open our Dominican Republic placements to 16 and 17-year-olds from July 2017! This is a fantastic opportunity for our younger students to explore a fourth Gap Medics destination and all of the amazing features it has to offer.
All of our core placements are available in the Dominican Republic as well as those in laboratory science and physiotherapy. Whatever you choose, you’ll witness first-hand what life is like as a doctor, nurse, midwife or dentist in a Caribbean hospital.
As with all of our placements across the world, you’ll gain unrivalled access to a busy hospital and see exactly what your future career might look like. While the placements are never hands on, you may be asked to help with non-invasive tasks such as weighing babies, dressing wounds and taking blood pressure. Your dedicated mentor will guide you every step of the way and answer any questions you have.
One of the most unique elements of our placement options in this region is that you’ll have the opportunity take part in an awesome community healthcare project that helps our partner charity hospital create pop-up clinics for underserved Haitian families living in the bateyes, or local villages for sugar workers. Community healthcare placements normally run for a week and are best paired with another week’s placement, such as medicine or nursing. These are only available in the Dominican Republic and Tanzania, and previous students have really enjoyed this aspect of their trip, which has enabled them to see how the healthcare system affects living, breathing communities in their chosen region. You’ll gain an incredible insight into rural medicine which could prove extremely helpful if you decide to work in rural Australia in the future.
You can find out more about our community healthcare placements on this page.
It was really great to see how their healthcare system is helping the poorer and more rural communities and I felt extremely blessed to be able to help out!

Our students love the Dominican Republic and the range of activities this little part of the world has to offer. One of the most obvious but most beautiful things you can do is soak up the sun on the island’s many beaches (average temperatures are as high as 28 degrees!); there are also opportunities for boat trips, snorkelling, scuba diving and horse riding. The country is proud of its 500 years of Spanish heritage, which are reflected in its food, music, and zest for life.
And after a long day on placement, you’ll always be able to go and relax in our exclusive Gap Medics accommodation, with an in-house chef and a swimming pool, surrounded by your new friends.
We’re extremely excited to be able to offer trips to the Dominican Republic to all of our students aged 16 and over! You can contact us if you have any questions or if you’re already convinced, click here to apply.
