Hospital doctor shadowing & global health experience programs.
The road to studying medicine in the US is long and winding, with plenty of obstacles for even the most talented applicants to stumble over. Not only this, but there is a steady increase in applicants, so the competition for places at the end of it is extremely fierce.
Thankfully, though, there are lots of ways aspiring physicians can set themselves apart from the pack. You can strengthen your application and thrive at interview by taking extra courses, working part-time, or becoming a leader in a club or society – each of these shows that you have drive, passion, and commitment. However, the most impressive way to bolster your med school application is by doing an internship.
Put simply, an internship is any amount of time you spend in a working environment shadowing professionals. Examples of this could include:
Medical internships for high school students will not usually be ‘hands on’, as you will not be qualified to carry out many tasks. While you may do ‘jobs’ during your internship such as scribing, filing, or attending meetings, the main purpose of the placement is for you to shadow health professionals in the roles that you might consider in the future. Your mentors should be open to you asking lots of questions and be positive and approachable. In return, you should be polite, turn up on time, and be patient during lengthy procedures or difficult cases.
At Gap Medics, we know that medical internships for high school students can be difficult to obtain, both because of the number of students applying for them and their rarity. That’s why we have placements available across partner hospitals in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean, where you’ll be only inches away from the action and still benefit from an extremely supportive professional mentor, whatever destination you choose.
Our placements require no specific qualifications or prior experience – just a genuine interest in medicine – making them perfect medical internships for high school students. As long as you are over 16, you are welcome!

You will be sure of your career path: one sure way of learning if a career is right for you is by spending a week or more doing it! By shadowing your mentor you will see the ups, downs, achievements, and challenges of their role, as well as the sorts of hours they work. You may even get a glimpse of what it’s like to commute!
You will get to explore a different part of the world: on a Gap Medics placement, you’ll get the opportunity to experience a new part of the world, maybe for the first time.
