Hospital doctor shadowing & global health experience programs.
If you are interested in becoming a physician assistant, or are already in a pre-PA program, you understand the importance of clinical shadowing. Pre-PA shadowing is an essential part of your educational experience.
We create programs that are designed for students who are interested in becoming doctors, physician assistants, midwives, and nurses. We have built strong partnerships with international hospitals and clinics, and selected the best medical doctors to serve as your mentors.
As a physician assistant, you will need medical knowledge similar to a doctor, with an emphasis on patient care. By shadowing with us at Global Pre-Meds, you will get to see a range of diverse medical cases and surgeries, and patients from different backgrounds.
Shadowing a doctor or physician assistant helps pre-PA students understand the lifestyle and career that they are committing to. The goal of pre-PA shadowing is to understand the role and responsibilities of physician assistants and be able to explain why this is the career for you.
Physician assistants, in particular, have many different paths they can take within their profession. Given the flexibility of PAs when it comes to choosing a specialty, you should make sure you observe many cases and aspects of medicine.
Shadowing also allows you to start building your connections within the healthcare field. Whether you shadow a doctor, nurse, or physician assistant, the professional relationship you develop can help you in your future endeavors.
On our hospital doctor shadowing program in the Dominican Republic, students who complete the program will receive a personal letter of recommendation from their mentoring doctor. After spending two weeks with your mentor, they will be able to provide a reference that is an honest reflection of your ability in the field.
Finding a physician assistant to shadow can be challenging. You’ll want to begin your search well before you plan to start.
We always recommend that you ask your friends and family if they know of a healthcare professional that would allow you to observe them. Even if that person is not a PA specifically, they may be able to refer you to a physician assistant that they know.
If you are unable to make a personal connection with someone to observe, you can start checking the listings for PAs in your area. You can call or send an email explaining who you are, what your interests in medicine are, and why you want to shadow that individual.
You could also use your school’s connections – either by asking a prehealth advisor or if your school has a club, like HOSA – Future Health Professionals. Many students are looking for these opportunities, so it is not unusual to make the request.
If you join us at Global Pre-Meds, all you have to do is apply!
Our hospital doctor shadowing and global health experience programs have been designed with PA students in mind.
We can help you take your experience portfolio to another level. You can either gain a minimum of 40 hours of shadowing on hospital frontlines in the Dominican Republic, or gain a global health perspective by observing different aspects of healthcare in Tanzania.
Few aspiring physician assistants get the opportunity to see tropical diseases or learn about large animal traumas. The experiences you gain by shadowing with us will help you as you continue on your academic and professional career in medicine.
We take care of everything for our students. Once you apply, you have our full support to get you to your program, and take care of your needs throughout the two weeks you’re with us.
