Our 2013 summer program was a huge success and places were quickly snapped up. Whether you are an aspiring doctor, or want to be certain that midwifery is the right career for you, there is no better way to discover it than with Gap Medics. Quality hospital work experience doesn’t have to be stressful to find – you can jet off on a 2 to 4 week placement with us and learn all about working in an international hospital!
For a lot of students, this may be the first time you have travelled abroad independently, or even your first experience of hospital life. Not only do our placements provide great experience, but they also offer a unique opportunity for each student’s personal and professional development whilst they are away. This is something that is far less likely if you simply sought work experience in your local hospital at home.
Your hospital work experience will consist of observing the day-to-day life of healthcare professionals. For aspiring doctors, this could be in various departments, such as surgery, paediatrics, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine and many, many more. As a nurse you could be working with Malaria patients. Midwifery students observe up to 10 births a day in some of our hospitals. There really is an endless amount of experience waiting for you!
If this is not enough, there will also be various global health tutorials for you to attend. These sessions are there to help you understand the cases you have seen throughout the day in more detail, as well as being a prime opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.
Evenings and weekends are free time for you to explore! You will be in a whole new country with lots of new and exciting discoveries around every corner. You could go trekking through the tropical jungle on the back of an elephant, go swimming with dolphins in the stunning ocean, take off on a safari with your fellow students, or simply relax on white sand beaches soaking in the sun if you prefer. Our Gap Medics houses are set in a perfect place for you to explore your surroundings.
It would be next to impossible for you to find a work experience quite like this back at home in Australia. Gap Medics offers unrivalled educational benefits, an insight into a wide variety of medicine and tropical diseases, all intertwined with the adventure of a lifetime with like-minded students from around the world.
Places do fill up very quickly and are limited so we advise that you book as soon as you can to avoid disappointment! You may even be able to receive academic credit for taking part in Gap Medics, depending on where you study. It is best to check with your teachers or academic advisors to find out more information about this.
