The Mayo Medical School is the teaching arm of the Mayo Medical Clinic. Launched in 1972, it quickly went on to become one of the top-ranked medical schools in the US. The mission of the school is to provide medical education that is focused on preparing physicians for the medicine of tomorrow.
Though the school is located in Rochester, Minnesota, students may also have the opportunity to learn and work at Mayo Clinics in Phoenix and Jacksonville, Florida. On the Rochester campus, med student may also study and complete their residencies at the nearby Saint Mary’s Hospital and the Rochester Methodist Hospital.
The school offers 42 enrolments annually into its 3 medical degree programs:
M.D. program: A 4-year program that admits 34 students a year
M.D./Ph.D. program: A 7 to 8 year program that provides training for career medical scientists. This program is jointly sponsored by Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School and admits 6 students each year.
M.D./O.M.S. program: A 6-year program that meets the requirements for medical licensure, the M.D. degree and certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The program is jointly sponsored by Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and admits 2 students a year. Students have to hold a D.D.S degree.
Admission Requirements, Dates & Fees
Mayo Medical School accepts applications from June 1st till September 1st. The application fee is $100 and the tuition fee for the year 2013-2014 is $43,150.
All students applying for the M.D. Program must hold a bachelor’s or Pharm.D. degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or Canada prior to matriculation. There is no preference for any one major field.
Only those students who have successfully completed the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) (link to article on ‘What You Need To Know About The MCAT Exam’) within three years of the matriculation year are considered for admission. This test is administered by American Colleges Testing Program and Services.

Highlights of the Mayo Medical School
- Mayo students can choose their Selectives, which are short, student-picked classes, as early as their first and second years.
- Besides academics, students can get involved in any of the school’s committees and organizations, including the admissions, financial aid and curriculum committees, the American Medical Women’s Association and the Student National Medical Association.
Financial Aid Program
The school has a very strong financial aid program that aims to make the medical profession more accessible to deserving students irrespective of their financial circumstances.
All Mayo students receive financial support to help offset a considerable portion of the fees. Those students who not receive extramural full-tuition support are given generous scholarships by Mayo Clinic.
