No trip to the Czech Republic is complete without a visit to the beautiful city of Liberec. A great base for day trips to the magnificent Jizera Mountains, this lively city itself has so many to see and do, it is difficult to decide where to start.
The Main Square acts as a great starting point for a tour around the city. While at the Main Square, it is impossible to miss the Liberec City Hall, with its slender towers and imposing silhouette that resembles that of a Gothic cathedral.
A short walk from the Liberec City Hall takes you straight into the charming fairy tale land of Valdštejn (Wallenstein) houses. This is a set of gorgeous half-timbered structures that were constructed sometime in the 17th century.
If you love visiting museums you are in for a real treat in Liberec. For museum lovers, this is the city to be – visitors come from all over with museums on their mind. The spectacular North Bohemian Museum, which is housed in a striking Neo-Renaissance building is a must-see. Here you can feast your eyes on interesting exhibitions about the history and local landscape in addition to a permanent display of stunning glass and costume jewellery that includes treasures such as a unique Cubist tea set.
If interactive exhibitions are more your style, a visit to the IQ Park is a must. Here you can try out some interesting experiments from walking in a rotating cylinder and enveloping yourself in an oversized bubble to creating a sculptural impression of your body and walking around in a room that is designed at a complex angle.
The Regional Gallery is the museum to visit if you want to admire top works by various Dutch, Flemish and French masters as well as a beautiful collection of Czech Cubism and Impressionism.
How about the majestic white tiger? Whether you want to mix and mingle with a few of the safer animals or stand at a safe distance admiring the majestic white tiger, the Liberec Zoo is the place to spend the day. The Liberec Zoo manages the biggest breeding programme of birds of prey in all of Europe.
For a panoramic bird’s eye view of the city, take a tram and head off to the tram station at the foot of the Ještěd Mountain. From here a cableway will transport you to the top of the mountain where you can either hike in summer or conquer the ski slopes in winter.
After a fabulous day of rambling around this beautiful city, treat yourself to some blissful pampering at the Babylon Centre, one of the largest entertainment complexes in the Czech Republic. Here you can choose from rejuvenating sea-mud wraps, relaxing African saunas, ethereal massages, several splash pools and more. A wonderful way to bring a fantastic day to a close.
