Shadowing a Doctor

December 6, 2013

Doing your internship in a foreign country, can be an exciting experience. But in order to gain the most out of this experience, it is important to be completely prepared and have everything in order before you leave. There’s a lot to do and several formalities you need to complete. Here are a few things that you will need to do before you get onto that plane for your internship abroad.

Get all the details about the programme

Most internship programmes abroad are organised by groups that specialize in sending students abroad and getting internships for them. These groups often have support networks that students can access before and also during their internships. The first thing you need to do is to find out all the details about the programme you have signed up for. If you have any questions in addition to the information you are given, don’t be afraid to ask.

A checklist always comes in handy while getting ready to go abroad. It’s nice to have one checklist for things to pack in your bag and another for things to do before you leave or while you are there.

Here are some essential things which should find their place on the checklist:

Check your funds. Even if you are getting a stipend for your internship, make sure that you have saved up enough money to carry along with you. This will come in handy in case of an emergency and well, it’s always nice to have some extra money to spend on buying a souvenir or going on a sightseeing trip.

Locate your embassy. Get all the details related to contacting your embassy in the country which you are going to and keep these details with you all the time.

Inform your family. Keep all possible forms of contact information with your parents or someone who you trust completely so that they can get in touch with you in that country.

Get an international Student ID card. These I-cards can be applied for online and they are valid in a number of countries. If these places offer student discounts for transportation, restaurants etc. you can avail of these offers through the card.

Get familiar with the country you are going to. Read up about the weather there as well as their customs, traditions, holidays, cuisine and other details. You should also look up the currency and exchange rates as well as any other information related to their policies which may affect you.

Upload your documents. Scan all important documents and store them online. You could even email them to yourself so that if you happen to lose any of your paper documents or if you suddenly need any kind of document, you will be able to access them online easily and print them out no matter where you are in the world.

Find out about medical facilities in the country. First of all, sit down with a sponsor and find out if you will have medical insurance in that particular country. If you are on any specific type of medication, research medical shops in the area which you will be staying, call those stores and find out if they stock your particular medicine and if it is easily available. If not, ensure that you carry a substantial supply with you.

It is worth remembering that the only way to fully enjoy your internship abroad is to be fully prepared before you leave.
