Strong research skills are an essential attribute
As a legal nurse consultant, the majority of your working hours will go into doing research into various medical scenarios and legal precedents that pertain to cases the lawyer is working on. To do this, it is important that you have strong research skills and know where to go and how to locate medical literature so you can do the necessary background checks. The critical thing here is to know how to obtain the information you need from authority sources.
Organisation and critical thinking are crucial too
A lawsuit can generate an unbelievable amount of paper and digital records. The ability to take complex medical data and organise it in a logical manner is one of the most crucial skills you can bring to the legal arena. In addition to sorting through medical records and putting them in order, you may also be responsible for developing case strategies, which requires critical thinking skills.
What about your communication and writing skills?
In the role of a legal nurse consultant, just having knowledge of medicine and the law is not enough. You should also be able to share it in a way that is easily understandable. As part of your job, you will need to take complex, confusing information and convert it into words that can be easily understood by the layperson. Part of your responsibility as a legal nurse consultant will also involve creating opinion reports, summaries of events and other such records. It is imperative that your writing skills are up to par.
Communication and writing skills are essential attributes when working with everyone involved in the case. You should be equally adept at relaying scientific and medical information that a lawyer can use to litigate, defend, settle or review a case. You must also be able to communicate with the lawyer’s client or discuss the case with the other healthcare professionals who may be involved in the case.
Last but not least…
While working on a case, you will likely be working with different personality types. You may not always be in agreement with your client or approve of the direction they are going in but whatever your reservations, it is important to put them aside and offer your staunch help and support for as long as you are working together. However, don’t be afraid to say no if it goes against your principles. If you are not sure about an answer, don’t be afraid to admit it. Not everyone has all the answers about everything. Just make sure that you take the trouble to research the matter and find the answer.
