3 simple ways to squeeze extra time out of your nursing daySeptember 4, 2014
Every minute counts in nursing school
Nursing school can be more hectic than you had ever imagined and finding even a few free minutes during the day can seem impossible. However, that’s not entirely true. No matter how hectic the day and jam packed your schedule, it is not too difficult to wrangle a bit of free time to yourself. All you need is a little bit of clever planning and organising. Here are a few simple ways you can squeeze extra time out of your day despite the rigorous nursing school schedule.
Tip #1 – Keep a pocket notebook with you at all times
Even though most of us depend on our phones and other electronic gadgets in order to get through the day, the art of physically writing things down has proven to be a much better way for someone to remember what they have written. Carry a small notebook or diary with you and write down all your appointments in advance. Make it a habit to check your notebook frequently so that you stay on top of what has to be done and when it is to be done. This small act will help you stay organised through the day.
Tip #2 – Start a to-do list
The idea of making a list may seem more time-consuming rather than time-saving but in reality, a to-do list is the most effective way to have a constant reminder of everything that needs to be done so you can check things off the list as soon as it’s finished. For example, instead of finishing your grocery shopping and then going all the way to school before realising that you forgot to pick up an essential item for your mum (which will mean that you will have to drive all the way back and waste another half hour after work), if you keep a to-do list, you can check it at the grocery store and finish off all your work in that area before going off to school. This will save you that extra half hour in the evening.
Tip #3 – Don’t keep for tomorrow what you can do today
Leaving things till the end will only make you anxious and tense and it will affect your work. Keep aside 15 minutes of your day to finish any kind of pending work, whether it is an essay for class or studying for an exam. Do it right from the beginning so that you don’t have to put in a lot of effort right at the end. Sacrificing a little time now is so worth it when you consider that you do not have the nagging stress of having to deal with it later. Also, when you work under pressure you are likely to take longer to complete the same task and you are also more likely to make mistakes, which means double time spent correcting the mistakes.
