Christopher Columbus called the Dominican Republic “the most beautiful land eyes have ever seen” – we totally second that. With stunning beaches and lush plant life in abundance, it’s difficult to imagine a more beautiful location than La Romana. Join us for a medical work experience placement here, and be part of our newest Gap Medics adventure.

This exciting, eclectic coastal city is a hive of activity day and night – from horse riding on the sand and snorkelling through coral reefs, to enjoying art and architecture in Altos de Chavon, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to filling your downtime. La Romana has a friendly, happy vibe. The streets are lined with market stalls and local cafes, and lively Dominican music can be heard playing almost everywhere. In the evenings, head to the beach for a cocktail in the moonlight, or explore the many bars and eateries in the city center.

A variety of hospital placement types

This destination is a great choice for students who want to develop their medical Spanish. We can offer pre-medicine, pre-midwifery, pre-dentistrypre-nursing and pre-physician assistant work experience placements in English or Spanish, or a combination of the two.

An advanced healthcare system

The healthcare system in the Dominican Republic is one of the most advanced in the Caribbean. It’s three tiered, with the poorest in society guaranteed free access. The system is an interesting mix of public and private facilities. You’ll have plenty of scope to learn about different specialisms and job roles.

Island hopping opportunities

A short distance from the mainland is Saona Island, a tropical nature reserve and part of the East National Park. Well known for its beautiful beaches, the island is a popular location with filmmakers and travellers alike. If you’re into snorkelling, visit the nearby Catalina Island and take advantage of the its crystal clear waters and abundant coral reefs.

Explore art & architecture

Don’t miss a trip to the nearby Altos de Chavon – an incredible 15th century Mediterranean-style village, built by Italian architect Roberto Copa in 1976. The village is home to numerous art shops and cafes, an archaeological museum, and a famous amphitheatre at which Duran Duran, Alicia Keys and Elton John have performed.
