“Totally and utterly fabulous!” Molly Larkin, Midwifery in Tanzania
It’s not uncommon for students on our midwifery placements to witness childbirth for the first time – and it’s a magical experience. Thanks to the success of our partnerships with hospitals across the globe, we are proud to announce a new arrival of our own: Gap Medics students under 18 years of age can now gain medical work experience at a new partner hospital in Warsaw.
About the hospital
Poland is a brilliant choice for those hoping to see similar procedures and facilities to those in the UK.
Our new partner hospital is a 227-bed facility, which underwent a seven-year renovation back in 1993. It is one of the busiest hospitals in Poland and delivers enough babies per year to man 450 football teams!
In addition to its 12 labour rooms, the hospital also has a range of different departments including:
- Obstetrics – pregnancy and childbirth
- Neonatology – the medical care of newborn infants (particularly premature or unwell babies)
- Paediatrics – the medical care of babies and children
- Gynaecology – the female reproductive system
- Chemotherapy – the treatment of cancer
As well as its great facilities and variety of departments, there are some other features that make this hospital a particularly fascinating place. For example, the staff run a childbirth school and free educational classes designed to help expectant mothers (and fathers!) feel more comfortable about the growth, delivery and first few weeks of their babies’ lives. The hospital also has a breast milk bank, where donations of breast milk are collected, vetted and then distributed to help feed premature babies.
While you’re there
We think our new hospital is top notch, and if you choose to complete a placement with us, there’s even more on offer.
After those long days on your feet, you will be transported (either by minibus or taxi) to your exclusive Gap Medics accommodation. Our hospital partnership may be new, but the friendly welcome is not: our 50-bed Garden House in Warsaw is in the popular suburb of ‘Garden City’ and welcomes hundreds of Gap Medics students every year. There are tons of great social space both inside and out, so you can wind down together come rain or shine.
Our Gap Medics staff will always be on hand to advise you on the best sights to see, foods to try and to solve any problems you have. You can follow our programme manager for Poland, Agata, and her students’ experiences on the hashtag #GapMedicsPoland on social media.
Gap Medics provides year-round hospital work experience for people aged 16 and over. Our shadowing placements offer a unique insight into the work of doctors, nurses, midwives, and dentists – helping students to focus their career aspirations before embarking upon medical training.
