What are the benefits of being a doctor in Australia?November 18, 2016
Studying medicine can be extremely stressful and time consuming (not to mention expensive). But thankfully, those who qualify will always be in high demand and can expect good salaries, varied and interesting work and the opportunity to specialise in an ever-increasing number of areas.
Australia is a particularly good part of the world to be a physician – here are just a few reasons why.
Great University Facilities
Some Australian universities rank in the top 50 in the world for preclinical, clinical and health studies – that means you’ll be choosing a course directly comparable with the likes of those in the USA and the United Kingdom.

A Hub of Medical Discovery
Prepare to make history – Australia is home to some of the world’s most pivotal medical discoveries including IVF, ultrasound exams, penicillin and the cervical cancer vaccine.
City or Country?
One of the best things about becoming an Australian doctor is the ability to choose where in the country you work – the city, or the countryside. While many physicians are attracted to the hustle and bustle of practising somewhere like Sydney or Melbourne, others swap the bright lights for a more personable role in a rural area. Rural medicine has its own challenges – the low number of medical professionals means that GPs are often also expected to be counsellors, social workers and, at times, EMTs – but the rewards can be huge. Good Work/Life Balance
Australians are famous for having a good work/life balance, even in some of the most stressful professions. Of course, saving lives can take its toll on even the most relaxed physician and people don’t get sick during convenient 9-5 hours, but if you choose to work in Australia you can expect your employer to value you taking time off for rest, relaxation and family life.
As you would expect for a highly trained professional, doctors’ salaries in Australia are competitive – the average GP earns between AUD $200,000 – $300,000. Newly qualified doctors begin on lower salaries, but that can rise very sharply once you have started to specialise in a certain field.
If you think a medical career is a good fit for you, then Australia is not a bad place to do it!
