Medical Projects For Groups

Our Special Projects Team work with both faculty and student leaders to create projects that meet the needs of groups wanting shared healthcare learning and/or volunteering experiences.

For faculty, we are able to provide infrastructure, access to local health facilities and professionals, and comprehensive logistics to facilitate international education modules. We are open to significant input from client institutions, including teaching elements and providing appropriate support and on-site accommodation for key personnel.

We also work with individual student leaders to help them create peer-driven group projects. If you are an active member of an existing student society, or if you are interested in starting a Global Pre-Meds Chapter at your educational institution, we’ll be happy to discuss the feasibility of your ideas or help with inspiration!

Your Hospital Experience

For most groups, the core of the experience is hospital shadowing, just as with our individual projects. We recommend you read our shadowing a doctor page to understand the opportunities this offers.

Our partner hospitals include a specialist trauma facility, three major general hospitals, and private healthcare institutions that specialise in a range of different fields. Our mentors are happy to adapt their approach to suit specific learning objectives and/or focus on particular areas of clinical interest.

The shadowing week is often reduced to four days in order to accommodate more community volunteer work or other group activities (see below), and an exact schedule of working hours can be agreed with the group leaders in advance.

We have doctors, nurses and public health specialists who usually deliver our Global Health Tutorials, and sessions can be adapted and extended to provide more academic elements to your group’s project.

Heather Bremner, 20

College Student from Edinburgh, UK

Dr. De Aza was so kind and considerate. She went out of her way to explain individual cases to us. I have learnt so much from her, not just medically, but also about how the hospital functions and the way things work. Dr. De Aza even acts out some scenarios and fetches bit of equipment just to aid our understanding. She is a great teacher and is also a very compassionate person who cares about her students wellbeing.

Lupita Medrano, 26

Completing a post baccalaureate pre health program at California State University, USA

I was able to witness the daily tasks of my dream career. I saw over 30 surgeries within my 4 weeks and witnessed a number of patient interactions that taught me more than I could have learned in a classroom. All of the mentors left a lasting impact on me, they were all extremely knowledgeable and passionate about teaching us.

Fantasia Smith 20

Biology Student at Oglethorpe University, USA

The people were absolutely amazing. All of the doctors, nurses, and other
interns were amazingly helpful and created an awesome atmosphere to learn and be immersed in the culture. The house was also well equipped to handle our group! There was everything we needed and I felt very secure there.

Accommodation, Logistics & Support

Our largest single guesthouse accommodates up to 74 students, and is available outside our peak summer season for exclusive use by groups. For bigger groups we have options for multi-site accommodation, or can run back-to-back projects.

With exclusive use of a Global Pre-Meds house comes the dedicated service of the entire local team, including our Chefs, Housekeepers, Student Coordinators, Activity Leaders and Security Guards; we’ll work with you to create your itinerary with all the support and supervision your group needs.

Food is a great part of the travel experience, and we’ll tailor the number of meals and menus to your preferences. We can also provide pack lunches for days that you’re out on community projects.

For your weekends or rest days, we can organize sailing excursions on the Caribbean Sea with on-board barbecues (and bar for over 18s if required), ATV driving, horseback riding and team sports – either to be included in your package or offered as optional extras.

Our Student Support Team in the UK will work with you in the months leading up to your trip to provide all the organizational assistance you require, and we’re happy to arrange pre-trip group preparation and Q&A sessions, either by video link or in person at your institution.

Community Volunteer Opportunities

Our base in La Romana is surrounded by “batays”, rural villages among the sugar cane plantations that are home to some of the country’s lowest-income communities. Access to basic healthcare is extremely limited in these areas, and we partner with a number of projects that have been set up to bring primary health services through field clinics and education programs to those most in need.

These projects are especially suited to university groups, as they allow students to have hands-on roles in activities such as setting up the clinic and field pharmacy, promoting the project with the community, organizing and registering patients, and taking and recording blood pressures. This kind of immersion is an excellent way for students to develop a strong appreciation of global health issues through first-hand experience.

We also work with a number of local orphanages, schools and community projects for which volunteers are always welcome.
