Trace the roots of medicine
You will visit traditional healers in tribal villages, gaining an understanding of medicine at a grassroots level. This unforgettable experience will give you insight into how culture impacts healthcare.
Get a global health perspective
You will tour both a clinic and a general hospital in Tanzania, with mentors to guide you through both facilities. This gives you the opportunity to learn about cases unique to the country, including large animal traumas. We also offer global health seminars so that you can understand the context of what you’re seeing. Learning what healthcare looks like in other parts of the world gives you a perspective on global health that will make you a better medical professional.
Go on safari!
Our program includes three days and two nights at a safari lodge in Ruaha National Park, which has one of the highest populations of elephants in East Africa. You get to observe the most powerful and majestic animals in the world!
Enjoy your sanctuary
Our famous Global Pre-Meds guesthouse will be your sanctuary throughout your program. Our dedicated support staff will take care of all of your needs, including delicious and locally-sourced food prepared by our full-time chef, as well as transportation to and from the hospital. Your job is to focus on the experience!
This is one of our COVID-resilient programs, meaning it is able to run safely even during the pandemic thanks to our extensive protection measures. If you are unable to travel on your intended dates, we will transfer you to a later session of your choice free of charge – allowing you to apply now with confidence.
Choose your age group
Our Medicine in African Culture program has separate dedicated sessions for high school students aged 16-18 and over 18s.
The content of the program is the same for all sessions, but those for high school provide an age-appropriate level of support with students supervised by our own staff 24 hours a day throughout the program.
Students aged 18 can choose to join a session with either age group.
