Nursing & Midwifery Shadowing

If you’re a nursing or midwifery student, or are hoping to become one, our program can give you valuable first-hand experience of the working hospital environment. It also provides a unique insight into global health and working in challenging conditions.

Just like our pre-med students, you will be mentored by a medical doctor, as this to be the most effective way to give you exposure to the work of the entire clinical team.

In the Dominican Republic, doctors actually perform some of the functions that are carried out by nurses or midwives in America and the UK, so this mentoring system allows you to experience natural deliveries, Caesarean sections, and a broad range of ante- and post-natal services.

A big part of nursing is establishing a relationship with patients so my mentor Caroleny would have us talk to the patients in English and then she would translate it into Spanish so we could have an actual conversation with the patients. That is what nursing is about and she made sure we experienced that! She said how patients in the States might not always speak English so we have to feel comfortable speaking to patients when they do not speak our language. I do not even have words to explain how amazing Caroleny was.
